Here are some general DO’s and DON’Ts for choosing a garage door colors:

• DO the garage doors in the same color as the house itself and not the trim color or white (unless white is your house color) if you want to keep them from standing out. The garage doors the same colors as the body of the house may also make your home appear larger.

• DO paint the trim around the doors either to match the door or to match the trim on the rest of your home.  Usually it looks best if it is the same as on the rest of your home but there are times when it may look better to not call attention to the trim with a contrasting color.

• DON’T do the garage doors in the same accent color as the front door or shutters. This usually draws too much attention to the garage doors and chops up the facade of the home.

• DON’T highlight the details of a standard garage door by painting the door in more than one color. There are historic or special doors where this may be appropriate but for the majority of garage doors this would not be the way to go.

Deciding how much you want your door to stand out is a good starting point.  If you desire the doors to blend in as much as possible matching the body color can really help to achieve that.  Trim color can be a way to have to door be a little more prominent but still match nicely.  Choosing a white door when you do not have any other white on your home, or the accent color can really make your door stand out as a focal point.

If your door is running rough, hesitating, or binding up it will only get worse with cold, icy, wet weather. • Style – Take a look at the overall style of your home. Modern looking homes will not work with the same doors a Craftsman style home will.
• Maintenance – The amount of maintenance is important so your garage doors (and your home) stay looking their best! Steel, aluminum, and fiberglass garage doors can easily be washed and hosed off to keep up that curb appeal. Wood doors require stain or paint to be applied every couple of years.
• Insulation – A crucial piece of getting a garage door to best suit your needs, the insulation, or “r-value” can be used to regulate temperature, create a more rigid door, and help to filter out traffic noise.
• Windows – Deciding whether your new garage door should have windows can be a little more complex. The cost increase to add windows to a new door is much less than adding them to the door after installation. Increasing natural light in the garage can save on energy costs to light your garage. Garage door windows come in a number of options: square or arched, grids or plain, clear or opaque glass.
• Color – Steel garage doors are available in several colors and it is possible to paint to match any color scheme. However, the warranty of steel doors can be affected by painting them and should be considered. Wood garage doors are available in many species and color of wood, in addition to being stained or painted any color.
